Before you begin any project, you need to know the starting point. When it comes to the Ford Modular engines, there can be some confusion. There are many variations of these engines used in Ford cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs from 1991 through 2016. The similarities between them make some parts interchangeable. However, there are differences too. To get the right parts, you need to know which version you are starting with.

The easiest way to tell the difference is to check the 8th digit of the VIN code on the original vehicle.

If you don't have the VIN, you can still identify the engine. Start by using the photos below to identify which valvetrain you have and follow the links for more information on how to identify engines in that series.

**Please note that this guide is intended for stock engines. If the engine you are looking at has been modified, the guide may not give you the correct answer.**
