This article applies to any Gen. 3 Hemi engine with the Multi Displacement System (MDS). You have three options that will keep the engine in 8-cylinder mode.

Option 1

Adjust the transmission settings. MDS is automatically disabled when you switch the transmission into Sport, Tow/Haul, or Manual shift mode.

Option 1 Notes:

While effective, this option resets every time you shut the car off.

Option 2

Use a Computer Programmer. Most tuning software and some handheld tuners offer the ability to shut off the MDS system. This leaves everything under the hood intact.

Option 2 Notes:

While slightly more permanent, this method still leaves the potential for MDS components to fail mechanically.

Option 3

Install an MDS delete kit or replace the MDS components individually. Many people delete their MDS when a lifter fails or when doing performance upgrades.

To delete your MDS, you MUST:

  1. Upgrade to a non-MDS camshaft.
  2. Install non-MDS lifters.
  3. Install MDS block off plugs.
  4. Turn off the MDS system using a computer programmer or custom tune.

Option 3 Notes:

Some engines with MDS also have Variable Valve Timing (VVT). If you want to maintain VVT operation, you MUST retain the entire wiring harness for the MDS system. Once the MDS block off plugs are installed, the MDS solenoids are no longer needed. However, DO NOT cut the plugs off for the MDS solenoids or unplug the MDS harness from the main harness. Doing this wil also disable the VVT.
